Bal Kumari Thapa's Inspiring Journey to Thriving Farming in Dolakha

Bal Kumari Thapa, a diligent and hardworking farmer, calls Boch, Ward 8, Bhimeshwor Municipality, Dolakha District, her home. At 50 years of age, she stands as an exemplary figure in animal husbandry, raising cows and chickens, and commercially cultivating vegetables.
Not long ago, Bal Kumari and her family struggled to make ends meet through farming, and their overall situation was quite vulnerable. About four years ago, they reached out to Rural Reconstruction Nepal (RRN), an organization actively involved in community-based agricultural initiatives. In partnership with RRN, Bal Kumari embarked on a journey into cattle breeding, making her initial cow purchase with a 50% subsidy. She recalls, “I started with just one cow, and over time, we’ve expanded our cattle family. My husband, son, and daughter-in-law have all joined in, allowing us to collect 15 liters of milk per day during the winter season. We sell this milk to a nearby dairy, contributing to a monthly income of Rs. 24,000 from cattle breeding.”
Simultaneously, Bal Kumari and her family also began their venture into vegetable farming, again with the generous support of a 50% subsidy from RRN. They cultivate tomatoes, eggplants, greens, cauliflower, cucumbers, and beetroot, which are then sold at the nearby market in Charikot. This entrepreneurial spirit extends to the cultivation of seasonal and non-seasonal vegetables on 7 ropani of land, resulting in an annual income ranging from Rs. 60,000 to Rs. 80,000.
With one son and two daughters, the entire family joins forces in this endeavor. They refrain from using chemical fertilizers and instead harness the power of cow urine and dung in their vegetable farming. The son’s commitment to this work is particularly noteworthy, as he expresses his desire to make a difference within his own country rather than seeking opportunities abroad. Bal Kumari proudly shares, “My son believes that young people often choose to work abroad but hesitate to invest in their homeland. He is determined to make a positive impact here.”
Her son furthered his commitment by undergoing training in vegetable farming, thereby enhancing their farming practices. Thanks to the combined income from vegetable farming, animal husbandry, and well-managed household expenses, providing education for their children has become more accessible. The family’s achievements have also ignited inspiration in their neighbors, leading to an increase in cattle raising in the community.
Bal Kumari’s optimism shines as she looks toward the future. Their plans include expanding the number of cows and calves and exploring opportunities to supply milk to local dairies. Their journey thus far exemplifies progress, unity, and a dedication to making a difference not only within their family but also in the lives of those around them. Bal Kumari Thapa stands as an inspiring figure, and her story continues to motivate others to take similar steps towards a brighter, more self-reliant future.
