Empowering Women in the Construction Industry: A Case Study of Sita Chaudhari

In Nepal, construction labor is predominantly performed by male workers, while women typically work as laborers. However, Sita Chaudhari, a resident of Mukta Kamaiya Basti in Srinagar, Rapti Rural Municipality of Dang district, defies this norm. As a member of the Pragati Community Based Organization, initiated by Rural Reconstruction Nepal (RRN), Sita has emerged as a skilled mason. Her journey from being a laborer to becoming a Mistri (a proficient mason) is a testament to her determination and the opportunities provided by RRN. Sita Chaudhari’s transformation began with her participation in a 65-day mason training program organized by Rapti Technical School. This comprehensive training equipped her with the necessary skills and knowledge to work as a mason. As a post-training support, RRN provided Sita with a set of tools relevant to her masonry work. This support empowered her to establish herself as a skilled laborer in the construction industry. Prior to becoming a Mistri, Sita worked as a laborer, earning only NRs. 400 per day. However, her newfound skills have significantly increased her earning potential, with her current income amounting to NRs. 700 per day. This increased income has enabled Sita to support her family, including her two daughters’ education, safeguarding them from the risk of becoming forced laborers. Sita’s success has also granted her a unique identity as a Mahila Mistri (skilled female laborer). With her thriving masonry career, Sita intends to give up her share-cropping activities to focus on her busy schedule as a mason. This decision highlights her commitment to maximizing her potential in the construction industry and further contributing to her family’s well-being. Sita Chaudhari’s case exemplifies the transformative impact of skill-based training and gender empowerment initiatives. Through the support and training provided by RRN, Sita has transcended traditional gender roles and established herself as a skilled mason, defying societal norms. Her increased income has not only improved her family’s financial stability but has also safeguarded her daughters’ education. Sita’s success underscores the importance of creating opportunities for women in non-traditional sectors and empowering them to break free from traditional roles, promoting gender equality and economic independence.
